Garrett started playing trumpet at the age of 11 at Spiro Public Schools under the direction of Amy Cumpton. He is a 2020 graduate of Spiro High School, where he won numerous awards, including the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in 2019 and the John Phillip Sousa award in 2020, and was a member of the 2020 Small School All State Jazz Band.
He began his collegiate studies at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith under the direction of Dr. Paul Hankins in the fall of 2020. After completing Army Basic Training, he came back to Oklahoma and began teaching lessons at Spiro High School and Middle school. In the spring of 2022, he transferred to the University of Central Oklahoma to study under Dr. Ryan Sharp for two semesters.
After a brief hiatus, Garrett came to Northeastern State University to study under Dr. Ben Hay and Dr. Jordan Vanhemert in fall of 2025. Additionally, he studies with Dr. Donny Albrecht, who is a freelance musician in the Washington DC area, and professor of trumpet at Frostberg State University in Maryland. Garrett is currently at NSU pursuing a Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Studies, where he plans to graduate in Spring 2028.
Garrett joined the 145th Army Band, Oklahoma Army National Guard as a Trumpeter in the summer of 2021, where he completed basic combat training and 10 weeks of school at the Army School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA. During his time in the military, Garrett has traveled all over the state of Oklahoma touring with the 145th, and to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The 145th Army band participates in annual celebrations, from Independence Day parades to Christmas festivals, and special occasions, like the Oklahoma Governor's Inaugurations. The band has been invited to be the house band for conductors' symposiums at the University of Oklahoma, and do master classes at different high schools all over the state.
In addition to being a part of the 145th, Garrett is also involved with the Spiro VFW Post 4884 and the Poteau Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 63 to assist with military honors for funerals and ceremonies on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day.
Garrett has taught lessons for many years, beginning with his time in the Spiro area in 2021, and continuing in the Tahlequah and Muskogee region. He has worked closely with Zomac School of Music since the fall of 2025 to provide lessons at both the Tahlequah and Muskogee locations.
